My post contentHow to Choose the Right Food Packaging for Your Product

1. Material & Barrier Selection by Food Category

Food CategoryPrimary ThreatsKey Packaging RequirementsRecommended Materials & FormatsCoffee & TeaOxygen, moisture, light, loss of volatile aromasHigh-barrier (near-zero O₂/WVTR transmission), opaque structure, degassing capabilityPET / VMPET / PE or Kraft Paper / AL / PE stand-up pouches with high-barrier foil layers and one-way degassing valves (for whole/ground coffee).Snacks & ChipsMoisture crispness loss, lipid oxidation (rancidity), crushingHigh moisture/oxygen barrier, nitrogen flush capability, puncture resistanceOPP / VMPET / PE or BOPP / Metallized CPP pillow pouches. Low Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR) preserves crunch.Frozen FoodsFreezer burn, low-temperature brittleness, puncture from iceCold-crack resistance, low-temp seal integrity, moisture sealNY (Nylon) / PE or specialized LLDPE vacuum/seal bags. Nylon adds toughness and prevents puncture at sub-zero temperatures.Dry Foods & GrainsMoisture absorption, pest intrusion, aroma transferModerate-to-high moisture barrier, structural stiffness, resealabilityPET / PE or BOPP / CPP flat-bottom or stand-up zipper pouches. Clear windows (PET) work well for visual appeal if light sensitive items aren't present.Wet / Sauce / LiquidsLeakage, pouch bursting, hot-fill/retort thermal degradationHigh seal strength, puncture resistance, thermal tolerancePET / NY / R-CPP (Retort CPP) spouted pouches or heavy-duty laminate bags capable of withstanding pasteurization or retort heat.

2. Technical Performance Factors

Moisture & Gas Barriers (WVTR & OTR)

  • Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR): Measures how much moisture passes through the film. Critical for dry foods and snacks; high moisture ingress leads to sogginess and premature spoilage.

  • Oxygen Transmission Rate (OTR): Measures oxygen permeability. Essential for fat-containing foods, nuts, and coffee; oxygen exposure causes lipid oxidation, rancidity, and color fading.

  • Barrier Layers: Aluminum foil ($AL$) offers absolute barrier protection against moisture, light, and oxygen. Vacuum Metallized PET ($VMPET$) or EVOH provide high barrier protection with greater flexibility and lower weight.

Sealing & Structural Integrity

  • Heat Sealing: Inner sealant layers (like LLDPE or CPP) fuse under heat and pressure to create hermetic seals.

  • Seal Strength & Tack: High hot-tack properties prevent seal opening during high-speed vertical form-fill-seal (VFFS) operations or heavy product drops.

  • Resealability: Integrated press-to-close zippers, slider zippers, or tear notches improve consumer convenience and preserve freshness after opening.

3. Food-Contact Suitability & Compliance

Never use industrial-grade films for direct food contact. Ensure all packaging components comply with food safety standards:

  • Food-Grade Resins: Confirm resins are virgin and certified for direct food contact (e.g., FDA 21 CFR or EU Regulation 10/2011 standards).

  • Solvent-Free Lamination: Use solventless laminating adhesives to avoid chemical migration or residual solvent odors affecting food flavor.

  • Migration Testing: Ensure ink systems and barrier coatings are applied to the non-food-contact outer layers or protected by a functional barrier layer.
